I hope these pearls on Valentino’s Woven Satchel are real because this bag is an outrageous € 3198.00/$4,318! There are a lot of gorgeous bags to be had out there at this price point, but this is not one of them. It’s not that horrible of a bag but it’s just not good enough to garner that kind of price tag. I don’t mind its backside with the simple and beautifully woven leather and can even overlook the many rows of fringes resembling my hula skirt if the price was, say, $500. The shape is actually nice and it’d be a great daily bag without all the unnecessary bells and whistles.
Look, I really appreciate the workmanship it took to achieve the tightly woven leather and to hand sew the pearls but really, a simple woven tote would have worked just fine. Valentino Shopping Couture Bags: The Soleil
Valentino has a new spring handbag collection called Shopping Couture. Designed by (Accessories designers and the new RTW designers) Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli, it is a series of 10 different handbags that are each unique and elaborate. They range from hand pleated leather with studs and grommets to a tote entirely covered with peacock feathers. These luxurious totes incorporate all the iconic Valentino Haute Couture details like the roses, embroideries, ribbons. The bags will be in stores beginning late November and a few will be released every couple of months through April. Prices range from $2995 to $5895.
We’ve gone back and forth on Valentino bags, some we love, some we don’t. But whatever our opinions, the brand keeps us engaged and interested. The tote above is called the Soleil – one of the 10 Shopping Couture handbags – a graphic design draws the rays of a couture sun, the curling element is secured by noticeable hand-stitching; transforming an artisan process in a detail. I am intrigued by this tote, it reminds me of the Maison pintucked bag but is even more intricate in design. The uber popular Maison pleated tote has a new little sister; one that is more subtle and feminine in its approach to pleats. The biggest trend we saw on the runways, both Spring and Fall 2009 was the creative use of origami folds. Valentino’s interpretation is softened and modernized– with functional shoulder straps to boot. The color is a bit blah but it could be a neutral for all the neon brights of spring ready to wear.
I like this, it has a quiet luxury about it. Quiet bags are the latest buzz word, you don’t want to flash any diamonds or embellishments right now as it feels inappropriate when 10% of the population may lose their jobs. Valentino Glamorous Tote
I would not get this bag mainly because it costs money, but if this somehow magically appeared in my closet, I would have loads of fun toting this around. I know, I have said nothing nice about all those ridiculous Valentino floral bouquet creations (and of course the sickly fringey one from yesterday) but this one is charming and pleasing to the eye. All the petals are made from cut out leather but it looks so light and delicate. I expect someone to make a comment that their grandmother would love this but that’s what adds to the appeal, like how homemaking (ie knitting, sewing and cooking) is so en vogue now. It’s like we’re so past all that so we can rest in the comfort of societal acceptance and just enjoy whatever activities we want, however backwards and mundane we all thought it was. This bag looks like you are carrying yarn in it but who cares! Wear this with something sexy and you are rocking the grandma look and demolishing outdated notions and stereotypes. Now that it is officially spring, everything is blossoming, including bags. Why not include accessories in the new bloom? I know I have done nothing but rag on the Valentino crap flowery bags but for some reason I am taken by this one. The ruffles are more abstract so they’re not literally flower pedals like the others, the looseness of the giant vertical folds work great for a long tote and of course the color, this blue, is so divine and gorgeous, it just makes me lust. I figured, if I need a big utilitarian tote, I can still do so with some flare and this definitely is more fun than a plain sack. I am so glad the cold weather is behind us, that means the cute dresses and shorts and super fun bags to go with. I just got back from NY where it was in the 60’s and I walked around in a t-shirt and jeans, this bag would have come in handy to complete the look. This bag give me hope that decadence will once again reign. Not that this bag is particularly fabulous or to die for but a giant bag encrusted with sparkling stones for 3 grand can only mean one thing – disposable income. And lots of it. Everything for fall is all about over indulgence and glamour and to me, that is pure joy and optimism. I prefer the frame, it makes more sense going over the top with a smaller evening look. Kaleido Tote for $2995 and Gemme Frame for $2980. Both at Bergdorf Goodman. I also want to pay tribute to Michael Jackson with a bag that is representative of his aesthetic of flash and fantasy. And a flash he was, he is gone before his time. He will be missed but he left us with a lot of memories and incredible music that has been the soundtrack to many of our lives.
Valentino Histoire Patent Tote
I wasn’t into the Histoire even though it seemed like the whole world went bonkers over it. There was too much going on, the thickly braided handles, the same braided detail on the many pockets, all the features we too big like a cartoon character. But of course it wasAngelina Jolie who propelled it into instant “it bag” status with the matching miniature version for *Sahara. But this tote is way more my taste. It still has bold details and the bright fuchsia in patent certainly adds an aggressive punch that screams to be noticed. Plus, it is a giant bag at 17″ x 15″. The little bit of the braiding detail is all that is needed, and the scrunched sides held together by simple buckles are way more appealing. It is open on top and is held closed by the cinching of the sides. I’m actually seriously digging this bag, it is the ONLY Valentino that has ever stirred me up. At Saks Fifth Avenue for $1895.
